Artist Interview - m.grzd

This week, we interviewed a new tattoo artist on the scene, Margo, who has unique ideas and a strong determination to progress and refine her skills.

Who are you and where are you based?

Hi! My name is Margo, I’m 22 and I live in Minsk, Belarus.

How long have you been a stick and poke artist and how did you learn?

I started in 2018, so I’ve been doing tattoos for 4 years. Some information I found on the internet, also I wrote to several tattooers who shared with me their knowledge. In the beginning I tried fake skin to understand how to hold the needle, how to prepare workspace and all this stuff. I spent the first year of tattooing at home practicing on my friends, myself and all the fearless people. The first tattoo I made was on my friend and it came out really terrible. But I kept trying and I understand that there is no other way without training and learning.

What is it that draws you to stick and poke tattoos?

For me, this is primarily simplicity, full control of the process and some kind of meditation. I made a few tattoos with a machine but it brings me less pleasure from the process, so I prefer stick and poke.

What would be your top tip for perfecting poke technique?

Stretch the skin as much as possible and don’t be in a rush.

Tell us about your favourite hand poked story

In the beginning of my stick and poke journey my mom was negative about tattoos and this culture in general. After year or so she became more interested and calmer. For today we’ve done 5 tattoos and it really means a lot to me.

What advice would you give to someone who’s starting out as a stick and poke artist?

I would recommend to use only quality stuff, especially needles and ink. Also don’t neglect the preparation of the workspace and sterility and don’t be afraid of starting and trying cause with time you’ll get better in tattooing!
