Was Hand Poke tattooing something you went to after machine tattooing, or has the hand poke style always been your preferred method?
I started learning electric tattoo from a friend of mine and was really fortunate to begin with somebody to explain a little on how skin works, differences in needle groupings, hygiene and aftercare and so on. After about a year of colouring in my thighs and marking a few brave friends I did my first hand poke tattoo. The confidence that came from a slowed down process led to significantly better work and two months later I had put the machine down for good.
What was it like the first time you put needle and ink to skin?
There's a bit of a story to that. December 2012 I had just bought my first machine. My band at the time played a show with an open bar and after the gig I took advantage of said open bar and made short work of a few too many Jamesons. I awoke the next morning and remembered that I had tattooed myself the night before, looked down at my ankle and there was this adorable, inoffensive cappuccino...it looks like a burger now. -Short answer is: I don't really remember.
Have you always been a tattoo artist?
I have not. I've studied product design, opened a few cafés here and there, played lots of music, had a stint as a surveyor, built motorcycles, and written for a couple of music blogs, but the tattooing is a new one for me. I don't think I'll be retiring any time soon, though.
Do you have any memorable/ funny stories you can tell?
I've given myself about 5 tattoos after having late cancellations of appointments and already being setup. I have a bit of a "well, somebody needs to get tattooed today" attitude!
So Single Needle Tattoo Kits, I believe that home tattooing is inherently risky, but people have, and will continue to tattoo themselves, therefore making a safe and affordable kit is the way forward... What's your take on this?
Anything to stop kids buying dodgy machines from eBay and butchering their friends.
