My name is Charlotte and I am a 22 year old graphic designer / photographer / hand poker from Dublin, Ireland. I have been doing hand poked tattoos for about 2 months now. The idea of being able to give someone something that will be with them forever is exciting to me! I would love to some day travel around to different countries and guesting in studios etc

Was Hand Poke tattooing something you went to after machine tattooing, or has the hand poke style always been your preferred method?
I was introduced to the hand poked method quite recently actually. I was at a music festival in Brighton earlier this year and a guy called Patrick (European.son.420) was doing stick and poke tattoos at it and that's when I got my first hand poked tattoo. Before then, I had gotten quite a few machine tattoos. Watching the hand poked method fascinated me and there was something more calming about it. I don't have a personal preference on what method people use, it more depends on the artist doing it and their style.
What was it like the first time you put needle and ink to skin?
I. WAS. NERVOUS. The first tattoo I ever done was on my dads leg. The idea of sticking a needle into my dad over and over was pretty scary (and a bit satisfying) but I needed a guinea pig and he volunteered. As I was dipping the needle in the ink my hands were very shaky, but I got the hang of it super quickly and both me and my dad were shocked at how well it turned out.
Have you always been a tattoo artist?
No, I have been to college to study graphic design and also have been doing a lot of portrait photography that i put up on Instagram .. @charlottelachaussee (sneaky plug) over the past couple of years. This year was my first year without being in education so I have been working in a pizza place as well as doing design and photography work on the side. Tattooing is still new to me and I don't know a lot of people who do it so I didn't know what the reaction was going to be when I did decide to start hand poking. I love how many new people I have met in such a short time.
Do you have any memorable/ funny stories you can tell?
I had a couple come in to get tattoos and they were honestly the funniest people I have ever met. It took me twice as long to finish her tattoo because she kept making me laugh so much! Another nice memory was tattooing my boyfriend because I knew he wouldn't have gotten me to tattoo him if he thought I wasn't good at it. So that was a nice little moment. :)

So Single Needle Tattoo Kits, I believe that home tattooing is inherently risky, but people have, and will continue to tattoo themselves, therefore making a safe and affordable kit is the way forward... What's your take on this?
I totally agree that hygiene is the most important part when tattooing. I'm totally game for people tattooing themselves but when I hear of people using unsterilised equipment like sewing needles, it scares me. I love the idea that you can buy tattoo kits that give you guidance and correct equipment that makes it safe. I think before anyone goes near putting a needle and ink to their skin, they should take the proper precautions and know that it's not as easy as it seems.
